U.S. Senate candidate Angela Alsobrooks delivered a powerful speech at the Democratic National Convention, praising her mentor Kamala Harris.
Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks, a U.S. Senate candidate, took center stage at the Democratic National Convention on Tuesday night, where she passionately praised Vice President Kamala Harris, her friend and mentor. Alsobrooks, who has known Harris for 14 years, spoke to the crowd about Harris’ strength, resilience, and her ability to stand up against criminals, drawing a direct contrast to Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump.
“Kamala Harris knows how to keep criminals off the streets. And come November, with your help, she’ll keep one out of the Oval Office,” Alsobrooks declared, referencing Trump, who is awaiting sentencing after his conviction in a hush-money trial in New York.
“Kamala has reminded us that we don’t need to fear anything — not the future and certainly not that man,” Alsobrooks said, referring to Trump. “This is our moment to leave Donald Trump where he belongs — in America’s past.”
Alsobrooks, who is running against Republican former Governor Larry Hogan for the U.S. Senate seat held by retiring Democratic Senator Ben Cardin, emphasized her admiration for Harris, who she said had been a “super bad district attorney” in San Francisco, before becoming California’s attorney general, a U.S. senator, and now vice president. She highlighted how Harris’ programs to combat recidivism served as models for her own initiatives in Prince George’s County.
With Maryland being a critical battleground state in the race for U.S. Senate control, Alsobrooks’ speech was not only a testament to her friendship with Harris but also a strategic move to galvanize support among voters. The Maryland delegation, positioned near the stage, enthusiastically chanted “Angela, Angela” before and after her speech, underscoring the strong support she has garnered within her home state.
Alsobrooks’ candidacy has attracted national interest and significant financial backing. The race between her and Hogan has drawn attention from both parties, with super PAC dollars pouring into Maryland. Super PACs, which can raise unlimited funds from individuals, corporations, and unions, are expected to have a significant impact on the outcome of the race, potentially rivaling the influence of the candidates’ own campaigns or national parties.
The stakes are high, as Democrats currently hold a slim 51-49 majority in the U.S. Senate. With Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia, a former Democrat now serving as an independent, retiring, and Democrats needing to defend several seats in states that President Joe Biden narrowly won in 2020, every Senate race is critical. Alsobrooks’ potential victory would not only secure the seat for Democrats but also make her Maryland’s first Black senator.
Alsobrooks expressed her pride and optimism in a statement released before her speech, saying, “I am honored to be delivering a keynote address tonight at the Democratic National Convention. I have known Kamala Harris for fourteen years, and I look forward to sharing exactly why she is going to make an incredible President of the United States.”
She also emphasized the importance of the upcoming election for Marylanders, stating, “Marylanders deserve a future we can all be proud of — one where our freedoms are protected, and our families can thrive.”
Harris, who recently campaigned with Alsobrooks in Prince George’s County, has also endorsed her for the Senate, urging Marylanders to support Alsobrooks in the upcoming election.
The powerful connection between Alsobrooks and Harris was evident throughout the night, as Alsobrooks’ speech served not only as a rallying cry for her own campaign but also as a strong endorsement of Harris’ leadership and her potential as the next president of the United States.
