Days after a bombshell report by ProPublica made the shocking revelation that Justice Clarence Thomas and his wife were receiving luxury gifts from Republican Megadonor billionaire Harlan Crow, Democratic U.S. Representative Alexandria Occasion Cortez has demanded the impeachment of the Supreme Court Justice.
She told CNN, in an interview on Sunday, that “it is the House’s responsibility to pursue that investigation in the form of impeachment.” The House of Representatives, however, has a Republican majority and such an option is unlikely to be exercised. Such a move by the Democratic party is likely to be stalled by the Republican majority.
“I believe that we should pursue the course. And if it is Republicans that decide to protect those who are breaking the law, then they are the ones who then are responsible for that decision,” she said of the House GOP majority, which would be unlikely to pursue such an investigation. “But we should not be complicit in that.”
The conservative Justice who joined the Supreme Court in 1991 has defended his actions, claiming that the real estate magnate has been friends with him and his wife for decades. In a statement, the Justice said that he was advised he was not required by law to report “personal hospitality.”
The Republican billionaire reportedly paid for luxury vacations of Justice Thomas and his wife, which included private jet trips to multiple locations around the globe (New Zealand, Indonesia, Georgia, Texas), stays at his upstate New York luxury resort, and his ranch.
Two dozen Democratic lawmakers have sent a letter to Chief Justice John Roberts to initiate an open investigation into the allegations.
