A song that uses Artificial Intelligence to clone the voices of Drake and The Weeknd has gone viral on social media.
Called Heart On My Sleeve, the track simulates the two stars trading verses about pop star and actress Selena Gomez, who previously dated The Weeknd.
The creator, known as @ghostwriter, claims the song was created by software trained on the musician’s voices.
“This is just the beginning,”
they wrote under the song’s YouTube video
“We really are in a new era,” responded one listener in the comments. “Can’t even tell what’s legit or fake anymore.”
“This is the 1st example of AI-generated music that really wowed me,” added Mckay Wrigley, an AI developer, on Twitter.
Since it was posted on Friday, the song has been viewed more than 8.5 million times on TikTok. The full version has also been played 254,000 times on Spotify.
“Heart on my Sleeve” was also put on Spotify by the TikTok creator, who dresses like a ghost and remains anonymous.
While Drake had no comment on this new single, he previously shared his thoughts about AI on Instagram.
“This is the final straw AI,” he shared when an AI-generated clip of him singing Ice Spice’s “Munch (Feeling You)” surfaced.
Record label Universal Music Group (UMG) has also come out against AI-generated music using established musicians’ voices.
The company, one of the three largest in the world, reportedly sent a letter to Spotify and Apple Music requesting the streaming services prohibit AI companies from accessing music libraries.
Buzzing over how the song’s vocals really do sound like Drake and The Weeknd, Twitter users expressed unease at the “scary” power of artificial intelligence.
On the track, the two simulated artists swap verses about pop star and actor Selena Gomez.
For The Weeknd’s part, the AI voice sings about his ex-Gomez, whom he dated for 10 months before the pair called it quits in 2017.
“Got these pearls on my neck, got these girls on my check like Selena baby / Oh, my genie maybe yeah, she taking the Lambo for a drive using the fancy door / When she went out the store, I throw my heart on my sleeve,” the fake Weeknd sings.
