Federal prosecutors informed a federal judge on Monday that they wanted to drop the indictment filed against former Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum and his associate Sharon Lettman-Hick.
The move brings to an end a long legal drawn-out drama. Two weeks ago, jurors acquitted Gillum of lying to the FBI. Gillum and his associate were charged with bilking political contributors out of money and utilizing the money for personal use. Gillum always maintained that he was innocent.
While the jury acquitted Gillum of charges of corruption, it reached a deadlock and could not reach a conclusion on more than a dozen fraud and conspiracy charges against Gillum and Lettman-Hick.
“Andrew Gillum had the courage to stand up and say ‘I am innocent,’” Gillum’s legal team said in a statement. “And that is finally being recognized. We want to thank the hard-working jury who did their job and explained to the government why it should drop the case. Andrew has endured a lot over the past few years and now can resume his life and public service.”
Gillum lost to Governor Ros DeSantis in a closely fought battle for the Governor seat in 2018.
