Joe Tacopina has built a strong reputation as one of the go to lawyers in the hip-hop world. He played a crucial role in defending A$AP Rocky during the rapper’s felony assault trial, ensuring his release and freedom. Since then, Tacopina has become a familiar face on major media platforms, frequently appearing on radio and podcast interviews to discuss legal matters and high-profile cases.
Tacopina explained that representing Diddy would have put him in an uncomfortable position due to the tension between Jay-Z and the Bad Boy Records founder. While he avoided making outright claims about the nature of their relationship, he implied that the two industry giants were not on the best of terms.
“I represent Roc Nation,” Tacopina told The Breakfast Club co-host DJ Envy. “I’m very close with Jay and Desiree Perez… They really are special, special people. That’s sort of family to me.” He hesitated to elaborate further but acknowledged that Jay-Z and Diddy were not exactly aligned.
DJ Envy attempted to clarify by suggesting that the two moguls didn’t “see eye-to-eye,” a comment Tacopina subtly agreed with. Co-host Charlamagne Tha God was surprised, recalling past speculation that Jay-Z and Diddy were close. Tacopina, however, dismissed the idea, explaining that just because the two had been photographed together at events didn’t mean they had a strong personal bond.
“Everybody’s in a picture with Diddy,” Tacopina pointed out. “At one time or another, that went to a party. But when things got real, years and years ago…” He trailed off, again implying that the two had a complicated history.
Tacopina isn’t the only lawyer who has distanced himself from Diddy’s case. Anthony Ricco, a key member of Diddy’s legal team, recently stepped down, stating that he could no longer “effectively” represent the hip-hop mogul
With high-profile names backing away, Diddy’s legal troubles appear to be growing more difficult by the day. Whether he will be able to secure a defense team that can navigate his challenges remains to be seen.
