A$AP Rocky stunned crowds on Monday evening when he jumped a barricade outside New York City’s Carlyle Hotel ahead of the Met Gala.
Viral video shared by the NFR Podcast shows crowds gathered outside the ritzy hotel hoping to catch a glimpse of celebs inside the venue preparing for the famed fashion gala.
As is typical on Met Gala night, a throng of fans gathered outside the hotel hoping to catch a close-up glimpse of the stars in their extravagant Karl Lagerfeld looks. They were held back by a set of fences while security guards paced the red carpet in front of them.
The rapper — who is dating Rihanna and expected to attend the event — went incognito among the throng of fans, clad in a black hoodie and dark sunglasses.
“What happened with A$AP Rocky is that I had felt someone tapping my shoulder, so I turned around and saw that it was him but my brain didn’t fully comprehend that it was him. “
The 21-year-old woman who A$AP trampled, Madelyn Llanes, later detailed the shocking moment and said.
‘He said: “Sweetheart I need to get through” and I just told him “no” because the barricade was right in front of me, there wasn’t really anywhere to go.’
Madelyn added: ‘After he hopped over, he was like “thank you” and then just laughed and flipped me off and then he went inside and that’s when I fully realised it was him.’
The footage shows A$AP subsequently jumping the barricade and pulling down his hoodie to reveal his identity.
He then gave a cheeky wave to stunned fans before strolling nonchalantly into the Carlyle Hotel.
It’s unclear why the “Praise the Lord” hitmaker was in the crowd in the first place, but it was perhaps a stunt designed to garner publicity.
The security guards didn’t rush to tackle the man so it appears they were aware of the stunt, that A$AP, 34, would be making a grand entrance somehow, or that they simply recognised him as a guest of the hotel.
Social media was generally unimpressed with A$AP’s antics as one commented: ‘If he broke her glasses, he needs to pay,’ while another said: ‘As a blind bat without my glasses or contact lenses — pay me what you owe me, A$AP Rocky,’ quoting lyrics from Rihanna’s song B***h Better Have My Money.
