Baltimore mayor demands gun control from Congress following Morgan State tragedy

Baltimore police say a shooter shot a crowd leaving a homecoming celebration Tuesday night, unsettling Morgan State University.After this, Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott told reporters Congress must approve gun regulation.

“Gun violence has plagued our nation for longer than I have lived,” said Mayor Scott.How can Congress members who have been mute on firearms join others who have pushed hard? What motivates them?

The Baltimore mayor told journalists that Congress should outlaw ghost weapons, assault guns, and downloadable 3-D weapons to reduce gun violence.

After Morgan State University’s homecoming week crowning, a throng left the Carl J. Murphy Fine Arts Center at 9 p.m. Tuesday.

Morgan State University junior and Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc. chapter president Jamal Brandon told journalists, “Everything when it first started was going on without a hitch.”

Brandon reported a triumphant coronation, but gunfire erupted outside the new Thurgood building as we exited the performance hall to take photographs. “One stray bullet hit Murphy, and people ran like crazy.”

Rep. Glenn Ivey, D-Md., told reporters he supports Mayor Scott.

“I think it’s important for us to make sure we try to have a comprehensive and coordinated approach to fighting gun violence, and I think that includes additional action from Congress,” the congressman added.

“I think congressional, Annapolis and local legislative efforts will be involved.”

Ivey said, “I think we have to be very thorough in working through solutions to this deeply ingrained and horrific problem that we have here in the United States.”

Maryland lawmakers are considering assault rifle prohibitions. Interestingly, this week, we commemorate Sen. Dianne Feinstein, who wrote the ten-year assault weapons ban that substantially reduced gun violence. Try again, he said.

D-Calif. Rep. Sydney Kamlager-Dove told journalists, “Congress should be doing more.”

Kamlager-Dove said, “We’re at a stalemate due to a lack of a speaker and a lack of interest in gun control, preventing passage of gun legislation.They disregard school shooting drills.”

The California politician told journalists, “I hope the next speaker will come in with eyes wide open to recognize that this is a critical issue and gun violence in the United States is an existential threat.”

The Morgan State shooting last night was the third homecoming shooting in three years.

A 20-year-old was shot during a university homecoming in 2022. Afterward, they were fine.

A shooter shot an 18-year-old male student in the chest during the 2021 homecoming. Local hospitalization saved the sufferer.

“I call Morgan State, Baltimore’s University, and we’ll continue to support such a great institution,” Scott said of the “national treasure.”

Scott stated, “We won’t let one incident where someone cowardly shot in a crowd outshine the greatness that Morgan students, staff, and executives produce daily.

Baltimore City and Morgan State University police are searching for the shooter.
