Tupac’s Father Says He is Disappointed in New Documentary Series About Tupac’s Life

Tupac Shakur’s biological father, Billy Garland, says he is “disappointed” in the new docuseries about Tupac’s life. The recently released five-part documentary “Dear Mama: The Saga of Afeni & Tupac Shakur” directed by Allen Hughes, has received positive reviews since its release on Hulu and FX.

Garland, a former Black Panther member, who was featured in the docuseries, says he was deceived and if he had known the direction the documentary was taking, he would not have taken part in it.

“After I saw the interview in the documentary, I was slightly disappointed, let’s just say that,” Garland told the Art of Dialogue. “I didn’t like it. It was more about something else, than about 2Pac, if you know what I’m saying. If I knew it was about ‘Dear Mama,’ I might’ve still did it, but I probably wouldn’t have. Not for nothing.”

Bill Garland seems to have taken exception to the insinuation in the documentary that his son Tupac may have been bipolar.

Despite the objections of Bill Garland, the documentary has received 100% positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes.

The TIME described it as “One of the most thorough, sensitive portraits I’ve seen of an artist who has by now been eulogized for longer than he was alive. And of the remarkable woman who created him.”
