Attorney Tony Buzbee, known for previously representing accusers in high profile cases including those against Sean “Diddy” Combs is now pushing back against a lawsuit filed by none other than JAY-Z. In a new legal filing submitted Monday in Alabama, Buzbee requested the court dismiss JAY-Z’s malicious prosecution claim, arguing that a prior agreement between both parties had already resolved the matter.
The lawsuit stems from a now dismissed rape case filed by a woman identified as Jane Doe. The original suit accused both JAY-Z and Diddy of sexual assault dating back to 2000 allegations that were quickly challenged and ultimately withdrawn. JAY-Z, born Shawn Carter responded by suing both Jane Doe and Buzbee, asserting that the claims were entirely false and a deliberate attempt to damage his reputation.
In his recent filing, Buzbee claims an agreement was reached on February 4, 2025, which included Doe’s voluntary dismissal of the federal lawsuit and a mutual understanding to end hostilities. He alleges that JAY-Z later violated that agreement by continuing to pursue legal action and allegedly intimidating Doe and her family.
Buzbee’s co-counsel, Marc E. Kasowitz, backed his version of events, claiming there were email exchanges with JAY-Z’s legal team confirming the agreement. He insists that in exchange for dropping the suit, JAY-Z agreed to stop all efforts to contact or pressure Doe. However, Kasowitz accuses JAY-Z of breaching that deal just one week later.
JAY-Z’s attorney, Alex Spiro, denied any settlement ever existed.
“It’s a total lie,” Spiro said. “The case was baseless, dismissed with prejudice, and no money was paid end of story.”
Importantly, the court dismissal of Doe’s case makes no mention of a settlement or agreement, reinforcing Spiro’s claim that JAY-Z never conceded to any terms.
