Democratic Representative Jasmine Crockett of Texas stirred controversy during a CNN interview on Sunday when she questioned whether the United States would hold elections in 2028. Speaking with anchor Jake Tapper, Crockett expressed doubt about the future of American democracy, citing President Trump’s alleged authoritarian tendencies.
Crockett was asked whether she would support fellow Democrat Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in a potential primary challenge against Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.
In response, she said, “That’s four years from now. If you were asking me at least in two years, then I’d have an absolute answer. But I can tell you that there are a lot of people watching this leadership in this moment. This is the moment. We don’t even know what elections will look like in four years, if we will have elections.”
Her statement, which implied that Trump’s leadership could undermine the electoral process, quickly went viral. Critics accused Crockett of fear-mongering, while her supporters argued that her comments reflected legitimate concerns about the future of democracy.
Crockett has been vocal in her criticism of Trump, previously calling him a “dictator” and an “enemy to the United States.” She has also criticized Hispanic voters who supported Trump, referring to their mindset as a “slave mentality” in a Vanity Fair interview last year.
As the political climate intensifies, Crockett’s statement serves as a stark reminder of the deep polarization gripping the nation. Her critics argue that such rhetoric undermines faith in the electoral process, while her supporters believe it sheds light on the threats facing American democracy.
In response to the backlash, CNN’s Jake Tapper did not challenge Crockett’s assertion about the future of elections, further amplifying the controversy. Whether her prediction holds weight or is merely political rhetoric remains to be seen.
