NBA Hall of Famer Charles Barkley has weighed in on the ongoing debate about sports teams declining White House invitations under President Donald Trump. His comments come after rumors circulated that the Philadelphia Eagles might skip the visit following their Super Bowl LIX victory.
Speaking on “The Steam Room,” Barkley did not hold back his criticism. He dismissed the idea that teams should decline the invitation simply because they disagree with Trump.
“I don’t care who the president is. He’s the president of the United States,” Barkley said.
He stressed that the White House visit is meant to honor athletic achievements, not serve as a political statement.Barkley also pointed out that while he does not always agree with Trump, he would still show him the respect that comes with the office. He voiced frustration over the growing divide in the country, calling it disappointing that political disagreements are influencing sports traditions.
The Eagles previously declined a White House visit during Trump’s first term due to controversies surrounding national anthem protests. Now, with Trump back in office, the debate has resurfaced. Many teams have skipped White House visits under different administrations, but Barkley believes the practice is harmful to national unity.
Trump has had a tense relationship with athletes, frequently clashing with sports figures over political issues. While some players have praised his policies, others have criticized his stance on social justice matters.
As the controversy continues, all eyes are on the Eagles to see if they accept Trump’s invitation or decide to make a statement by staying away. The debate over sports and politics remains as heated as ever, with Barkley making it clear that, in his view, boycotting the White House is a mistake.
