Duolingo, known as the world’s most popular language-learning app, has officially joined the growing list of brands playfully mocking Drake amid his ongoing feud with Kendrick Lamar. Since April 2024, when the rap battle between the two artists reignited, various companies including Heinz, NBA, and Apple Music have jumped into the online banter. Now, Duolingo has taken it a step further by crafting an elaborate joke centered around its iconic green owl mascot, Duo.
On February 11, the app posted a shocking yet humorous Instagram announcement, claiming that Duo had met an untimely demise.
“It is with heavy hearts that we inform you that Duo, formerly known as The Duolingo Owl, is dead,” the statement read.
While the cause of death remained under investigation, the post cheekily suggested that the beloved bird might have perished from waiting too long for users to complete their language lessons. For more updates check our Youtube channel.
However, the most intriguing part of the post was Duolingo’s response to a fan inquiry about a possible suspect. The brand replied, “Authorities are looking into a Canadian rapper.” The reference, though indirect, was enough for social media users to connect the dots—this was clearly a shot at Drake.
Drake has been at the center of internet jokes for months, especially after Kendrick Lamar smashed a piñata resembling his OVO owl logo in the *Not Like Us* music video. The Toronto rapper’s rough streak has continued with Kendrick’s Grammy wins and a show-stopping Super Bowl Halftime performance. Duolingo’s joke only adds to his list of recent public jabs.
The app didn’t stop at Instagram. On X (formerly Twitter), it posted, “We’re currently investigating Jimmy,” a likely nod to Drake’s former *Degrassi* character, Jimmy Brooks. Over on TikTok, the brand shared an animated clip of characters Lily and Zari solemnly placing Duo’s ‘body’ into a pickup truck, further fueling the comedic narrative.
As for Drake, it’s unclear whether he’ll respond or let this one slide. But one thing is certain Duolingo just turned language learning into a meme-worthy moment once again.
