President Joe Biden has announced a one-time payment of $770 for victims of the ongoing California wildfires. This financial assistance is intended to help survivors purchase essential items such as water, baby formula, and prescription medications.
The announcement came during a wildfire briefing at the White House. Biden stressed the urgency of providing support immediately, stating, “We’re not waiting until those fires are over to start helping the victims.”
“People impacted by these fires are going to receive a one-time payment of $770, so they quickly purchase things like water, baby formula, and prescriptions,” Biden said.
FEMA activated its Critical Needs Assistance Program last week, enabling these payments. According to a White House official, nearly 6,000 survivors have already registered, and $5.1 million has been distributed. The program aims to provide swift relief to those displaced or impacted by the wildfires.
The fires have caused widespread devastation across California. Biden shared updates on containment progress: 14% containment in Pacific Palisades, 33% in Pasadena, and 100% in Ventura. Last week, Biden pledged that the federal government would cover 100% of California’s wildfire-fighting costs for 180 days. This support will extend into President-elect Donald Trump’s administration, set to begin on Monday.
Meanwhile, tensions remain high between Trump and California Governor Gavin Newsom. Trump has criticized Newsom’s handling of the crisis and called for his resignation. Newsom, in turn, raised concerns that Trump may withhold federal disaster aid once in office.
Republican lawmakers have also suggested placing conditions on wildfire relief funds. Democrats have strongly opposed the idea, warning it could set a harmful precedent for future disaster responses.
This federal aid marks a crucial step in helping affected families recover from the disaster.
