Don Lemon, former CNN anchor, has sharply criticized Barack Obama for his friendly exchange with Donald Trump at the funeral of former President Jimmy Carter. Obama and Trump were seen sitting together, chatting, and laughing, a moment that quickly went viral. For many, this interaction was surprising given the bitter history between Trump and the Democratic Party, particularly over Trump’s role in promoting racist conspiracy theories like birtherism against Obama. Lemon voiced his concern about the optics of the situation, questioning how Obama could act so friendly with Trump, a man who had spent years undermining him.
“How could Barack Obama, the man who faced vicious, racist conspiracies for years because of Trump, act so buddy-buddy with him?” Lemon asked in a video posted over the weekend.
Lemon went on to criticize the Democratic Party for what he saw as a contradiction between their portrayal of Trump as a fascist and their interactions with him. He asked whether Obama and other Democratic leaders had forgotten their own descriptions of Trump as a threat to democracy. “Does he not remember how his entire political party has been calling the man a fascist, an autocrat, a threat to democracy for months, if not years?” Lemon questioned. While he acknowledged that Obama may have been fulfilling his duty as a former president attending a state funeral, he emphasized that laughing at Trump’s jokes on camera was risky and could damage the Democratic Party’s credibility.
Lemon urged Democrats to consider the message they are sending to voters. “Optics like this are things that Democrats have to consider going forward,” he said, warning that voters might feel betrayed if they appear to embrace Trump or downplay his actions. He pointed out that many Democrats had previously warned about Trump’s dangerous tendencies, making it all the more important to maintain a strong stance against him. “You can’t just memory hole comparing someone to Hitler,” Lemon added. As Democrats prepare for future elections, Lemon’s message is clear: their actions around Trump matter. He warned that continuing to prioritize cordial relations with Republicans, especially those who supported violent acts like the January 6 insurrection, would harm their credibility and the trust of their voters.
