Sean “Diddy” Combs, the renowned music mogul, is set to face a sex-trafficking trial, which has been scheduled to begin on May 5th. The decision was made by the presiding judge, Arun Subramanian, during a court proceeding in Manhattan federal court. This marked Combs’s first appearance in front of Judge Subramanian, who took over the case after another judge stepped down due to prior associations with attorneys involved in the case.
Prosecutors disclosed new information during the hearing, revealing that authorities had seized a staggering 96 electronic devices during raids conducted at Combs’s Miami and Los Angeles homes, as well as a private airport in South Florida. In addition to these devices, four more were taken into custody when Combs was arrested on September 16th. As the case progresses, prosecutors hinted that Combs may face additional charges beyond the ones currently levied against him.
Combs, who is 54 years old and the founder of Bad Boy Records, previously pleaded not guilty to the charges of racketeering conspiracy and sex trafficking. These charges stem from accusations dating back to 2008. According to the indictment, Combs is accused of abusing, threatening, and coercing women, as well as other individuals, to satisfy his sexual desires, protect his public image, and cover up his misconduct.
Federal prosecutors further allege that Combs verbally, emotionally, physically, and sexually abused women. They also claim that he manipulated women into participating in highly orchestrated sexual performances with male commercial sex workers. These alleged acts were carried out through a combination of coercion, drugs, and financial manipulation. Prosecutors assert that Combs controlled the careers of his accusers and exploited his influence to entrap them further.
A significant part of the accusations revolves around events that the prosecutors describe as “freak-off” parties. These gatherings, allegedly organized by Combs, involved highly choreographed sexual performances. Prosecutors claim that Combs orchestrated these events, directed the activities, and even filmed many of the encounters. In some instances, these “freak-off” parties allegedly lasted for several days, with participants receiving intravenous (IV) fluids afterward to help them recover from the physical toll and drug use associated with the events.
Since his arrest on September 16th, Combs’s legal team has been pushing for his release on bail, but their efforts have been unsuccessful. Two judges have denied bail, determining that Combs poses a danger to the community and could potentially interfere with witnesses or the ongoing investigation. Following his arrest, a judge rejected a $50 million bail proposal from Combs, citing concerns about his ability to obstruct justice.
Combs’s legal team has since filed an appeal, requesting the Second U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to overturn the lower court’s decision to deny bail. They argued that the proposed bail package would prevent him from posing a danger to anyone or contacting witnesses. However, the judges have thus far sided with the government’s position that Combs should remain in custody until his trial.
Adding to the complexity of the case, Combs’s lawyers filed additional paperwork claiming that the Department of Homeland Security, one of the agencies involved in investigating the case, leaked a video showing Combs beating his ex-girlfriend, Cassie Ventura, in a hotel hallway eight years ago. The footage was broadcast by a news channel in May, which Combs’s defense team argues has generated damaging pre-trial publicity, potentially tainting the jury pool and jeopardizing his right to a fair trial. Prosecutors, on the other hand, have denied any involvement in leaking the video, stating they did not possess it before it was made public.
In response to the release of the video, Combs posted a statement on social media expressing his remorse. “I was disgusted when I did it, and I’m disgusted now,” he said, reflecting on the disturbing footage.
