Lil Nas X has apologised to the trans community for causing offence in a now-deleted tweet joking he had transitioned to a woman.
In the post, the rapper, 23, had uploaded an image of a young Black woman who resembled him with the caption: ‘the surgery was a success
He was referring to ‘facial feminization surgery’ which many transgender women undergo to alter typically masculine features to appear more feminine.
Lil Nas X soon faced backlash over the post, with one fan accusing him of using trans people as a ‘punchline’ amid an uptick in anti-transgender legislation in the US.
The post was met with criticism from members of the LGBTQ+ community for joking about transgender individuals, especially as more than 400 anti-trans bills are currently being proposed across the United States
“I’m literally just saying she looks like me y’all cannot be f**kin serious”
he fired back in a since-deleted tweet.
Amid the backlash, the STAR WALKIN’ singer deleted the offending tweet and posted to Twitter, “apologies to the trans community I def handled that situation with anger instead of considering why it was not cool. Much love to you guys. Sorry.”
Despite the public apologies, some fans claimed the apology was “fake as hell” and that he should instead support the trans community “in material ways that include money, sharing your platform to raise a [sic] awareness”.
Lil Nas X then quote tweeted the user, simply writing, “girl eat my a**.”
The 23-year-old is certainly no stranger to stirring the pot. Back in 2021, the openly gay rapper riled up religious groups after releasing the raunchy clip for MONTERO (Call Me By Your Name).
Conservative groups claimed he was promoting “gay agendas and demonic visuals” in the video where he’s seen giving Satan a lap dance and sliding down a stripper pole.
Last year, the Human Rights Campaign reported that “at least 38 transgender people” were murdered, with a majority of them being Black or Latinx transgender women.
