Vice President Kamala Harris made a memorable entrance during her inaugural visit to her campaign headquarters on Monday evening, stepping out to the empowering anthem “Freedom” by Beyoncé. According to a source close to Harris, her team obtained approval from Beyoncé’s representatives to use the song throughout her presidential campaign.
Beyoncé, renowned for her stringent clearance guidelines, swiftly granted permission for Harris to use “Freedom” on the same day it was requested, just hours before Harris’s grand entrance, the source added. While Beyoncé has not officially endorsed Harris since President Joe Biden announced he would not seek re-election, allowing the use of “Freedom” signals the superstar’s implicit support.
Neither the Harris campaign nor Beyoncé’s representatives have responded to a news channel requests for comment. However, Beyoncé’s mother, Tina Knowles, publicly endorsed Harris on Sunday, shortly after Biden’s announcement. Knowles expressed her support on Instagram, posting a photo with Harris and praising her youthful energy and leadership qualities. “New, Youthful, Sharp energy !!!! Putting personal Ego, power and fame aside. That is the definition of a great leader. Thank you, President Biden, for your service and your leadership. Go Vice President Kamala Harris for President. Let’s Go,” she wrote.
Beyoncé has a history of supporting Democratic candidates. In 2013, she performed the National Anthem at President Barack Obama’s inauguration. In 2016, Beyoncé and her husband Jay-Z headlined a pre-election concert for Hillary Clinton in Cleveland, Ohio, with her backup dancers donning blue pantsuits in homage to Clinton. “I want my daughter to grow up seeing a woman lead our country and knowing that her possibilities are limitless,” Beyoncé stated at the time. “And that’s why I am with her.”
In 2020, Beyoncé endorsed the Biden-Harris ticket, encouraging her followers on Instagram to vote. “Freedom,” a song from her critically acclaimed 2016 album “Lemonade” featuring Kendrick Lamar, became an anthem of the 2020 George Floyd protests, seeing a 625% increase in streams during that time.
Following Biden’s withdrawal from the presidential race and his endorsement of Harris over the weekend, Hollywood donors have reportedly been energized and motivated to support Harris’s campaign. High-profile figures have already voiced their support on social media. Jamie Lee Curtis praised Harris as a “trusted and tested advocate for women’s rights and people of color,” while Barbra Streisand expressed confidence that Harris would continue Biden’s work and make a great president.
George Clooney, who previously penned an op-ed in the New York Times urging Biden to step down, has now thrown his support behind Harris. “President Biden has shown what true leadership is,” Clooney stated. “He’s saving democracy once again. We’re all so excited to do whatever we can to support Vice-President Harris in her historic quest.”
While Harris has secured official clearance to use Beyoncé’s music, her potential opponent, Donald Trump, continues to face challenges in gaining support from musicians. Artists like Adele, Bruce Springsteen, Neil Young, Pharrell, Queen, Rihanna, and the White Stripes have all refused to allow Trump to use their music. In contrast, Kid Rock recently supported Trump during his appearance at the Republican National Convention.
On Monday night, Harris’s campaign headquarters resonated with the powerful lyrics of
“Freedom,” as she walked out to: “Freedom, Freedom Where are you? ‘Cause I need freedom, too I break chains all by myself Won’t let my freedom rot in hell Hey! I’ma keep running”
This moment marked the beginning of Harris’s historic campaign, underscored by the spirit of resilience and determination encapsulated in Beyoncé’s anthem.
