Rihanna Addresses ‘Retirement’ Rumors and Teases New Album ‘R9’

Rumors and Teases New Album

Rihanna Addresses ‘Retirement’ Rumors and Teases New Album ‘R9’’. Rihanna has reassured fans that she hasn’t hung up her microphone for good. The multi-talented star opened up to ET’s Kevin Frazier during the launch of her new venture, Fenty Hair, at Nya Studios in Los Angeles, sharing insights on her music career and upcoming projects.

Speculation about Rihanna’s music career status has been swirling since she was recently spotted in New York City with partner A$AP Rocky, wearing a t-shirt emblazoned with the words “I’m Retired.” This prompted a wave of concern among her fanbase, known as the Navy. “People got triggered with that retired word,” Rihanna quipped during her interview with ET. “They were like, ‘We’re never getting an album now.’ No one read the other line, it was something about, ‘This is as dressed up as I get.'”

Despite the playful t-shirt, Rihanna confirmed that she is indeed working on her highly anticipated album, affectionately dubbed ‘R9’ by fans.

“I think that music, for me, is a new discovery,” she revealed. “I’m rediscovering things. I have been working on the album for so long that I kinda put all that stuff aside and now I’m prepared to go back in the studio. I’m gonna start — give me a second!”

Rihanna’s journey with her music is evolving, and she is embracing the process of revisiting old material while also creating new sounds. “Yeah, I’m starting over,” she said. “But I don’t want to neglect the songs that I have, so I actually want to go back and listen to stuff with new ears, with my new perspective and then see what applies and what I’m still in love with.”

While it has been eight years since her last album, Anti, was released in 2016, Rihanna’s past hits continue to resonate with audiences. Recently, her 2012 single, “Diamonds,” achieved Diamond certification from the RIAA. Reflecting on the song’s enduring popularity, she shared, “Wow, I remember where we made it from the jump. It was in London, and I also remember performing ‘Diamond’ on tour. Performing it with all the lights…everyone puts their phone out at that very moment. And it’s connected to my grandma. I literally think of her every single time I perform that.”

Amidst the excitement around her music, Rihanna has been focusing on expanding her business empire. Her latest venture, Fenty Hair, aims to bring inclusivity and diversity to the haircare market. “Inclusivity has always been a big, big deal for us,” she emphasized. “And we didn’t want to change that with going into a new category, which is hair. We wanted to make sure that we applied that. We started off trying to make one product for all hair types and that’s just like one of those things, you can’t. So we had to shift gears. We’ve been working on this for over four years.”

Launching on June 13 at Fentyhair.com, Fenty Hair promises to cater to a variety of hair types and textures, embodying the same inclusive spirit that has defined Rihanna’s other ventures, such as Fenty Beauty and Savage X Fenty. “I just didn’t believe that we could continue like that, so I wanted to just make sure that we knew that everyone was included. All hair types, there’s not a race to hair. Hair is different for everyone.”

As Rihanna continues to balance her roles as a musician, entrepreneur, and mother of two, fans eagerly await the next chapter in her musical journey. Her reassurances about ‘R9’ suggest that, while the wait has been long, the results will be worth it.
