The former president was also indicted in Georgia on multiple charges related to election interference, and recently posted a $175 million bond to prevent the state from seizing his assets while he appeals a judge’s ruling that he fraudulently inflated his wealth for financial gain.
Reid criticized Trump’s attacks on the judge and prosecutors, saying he’s “outdoing actual mobsters.” She noted that one of Trump’s lawyers had mobster Benny Eggs as a client, implying that Trump’s behavior is more egregious than that of actual criminals.
Trump has been accused of violating a gag order by publishing social media posts attacking witnesses, including Michael Cohen and Stormy Daniels. Bragg filed a motion to hold Trump in contempt of court, which could result in additional charges or penalties.
The case has sparked debate, with only 35% of Americans believing Trump committed a crime, according to an Associated Press/NORC poll. Trump has claimed that payments he made to Cohen were merely a “legal expense,” while Cohen has said Trump reimbursed him for a $130,000 payment to keep Daniels quiet about an alleged affair, which Trump denies.
Reid’s comments about DEI (diversity, equity, and inclusion) sparked a larger conversation about the role of multiculturalism and multiracial democracy in holding Trump accountable. She noted that the prosecutors in the case embody the very diversity and inclusion that Trump and his allies have sought to dismantle.
“So Donald Trump is at this point outdoing actual mobsters in his attacks on the judge’s family, the daughter,” she said.
