Memphis police say two people are charged after a gunshot near the FedEx Forum.
Kelvin Young, 37, is charged with aggravated assault, avoiding arrest, theft of a firearm under $2,500, unauthorized possession of a weapon, three counts of reckless endangerment, and domestic violence bail violations.
“The Memphis Police Department works hard to keep downtown residents and visitors safe. Community safety and well-being are our primary priorities.” Police Department of Memphis
“We are increasing visibility in downtown and will continue to use additional security measures to make everyone feel safer.” They added.
After police found Miciah Warren, 25, with a Nashville pistol, he was charged with theft under $2,500.
Authorities said the incident occurred near Ida B. Wells at 7:06 p.m. During traffic control, an officer heard rounds fired. Two suspects fired at each other, triggering police intervention.
Warren, who fled toward the officer, was quickly arrested. Young was located and arrested shortly after.
A passerby fell during the turmoil and was slightly hurt, but no one was shot. Bystander was sent to neighboring hospital for treatment.
Initial investigations indicated the incident was targeted because the accused and victims knew each other.
Young admitted to shooting Warren and pursued him along South 4th Street in an affidavit. He admits buying the stolen gun for $100 from an unknown source.
Young was out on bail for domestic violence and prohibited from owning guns.
Memphis Police Department reaffirmed its commitment to public safety, especially in downtown areas frequented by residents and visitors, after the event. Police visibility and security have enhanced to protect the community.
Residents and politicians worry about the FedEx Forum shooting. Public violence, especially near the FedEx Forum, a popular sports, concert, and event venue, shocks the community.
Memphis faces gun violence like many other cities. These occurrences highlight the necessity for comprehensive violence prevention and citizen protection measures.
Given Kelvin Young’s prior release restrictions barring him from carrying weapons, police may investigate how he and Miciah Warren obtained firearms. This calls into doubt the efficacy of current gun control laws and the necessity for tougher enforcement to keep violent people out.
Even though police were more visible downtown, which raised security worries, the shooting still happened. Law enforcement, community involvement, mental health support, and addressing the socioeconomic issues that lead to crime and violence are all part of this approach to public safety.
Community leaders and groups will fight for community police, programs to stop crime, and chances for at-risk teens and young adults to avoid gun violence.
The event also emphasizes awareness and reporting suspicious activity to law enforcement. Law enforcement’s quick response prevented more injury, demonstrating their vital role in public safety.
Residents and stakeholders should continue to promote peace and security in their neighborhoods as the shooting investigation progresses. Memphis can become safer and more resilient for its inhabitants by working together and supporting violence-reduction measures.
