Former Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers star Rajon Rondo wants to drop gun charges from a January Indiana arrest.
Rondo’s lawyers told TMZ that the pistol recovered during a routine traffic stop violates his right to bear arms.
“I asked Rondo Sr. if he was allowed to have a gun, and Rondo Sr. said he was not allowed.” Report of the officer
“The statute under which Rondo is charged fails to be consistent with the Nation’s historical tradition of firearm regulation,” Rondo’s lawyers claimed in court, highlighting his constitutional case.
Rondo was arrested in Jackson County, Indiana, near his hometown of Louisville, Kentucky, on January 28. Police increased the traffic stop after smelling marijuana in his Tesla, which had no license plates.
After a search, police found a loaded Sig Sauer P365, THC-infused candy, a tiny amount of marijuana, and a pipe with cannabis residue.
Rondo was charged with drug paraphernalia, marijuana, and handgun possession after the finding. Even though he was released on a $705 bond, the legal consequences continue.
While Rondo’s legal team argues for his right to possess the handgun, law enforcement officials say he knew he couldn’t due to a previous charge.
Since the case is ongoing, the judge has not ruled on the move to dismiss. Rondo’s lawsuit will be discussed later this month.
